Overview Of Road Safety
Globally, road safety remains a significant concern, with over 1.19 million lives lost and over 4 million people impacted by road traffic accidents annually. Africa is one of the continents with the highest traffic fatalities in the world. In Nigeria for example this issue is particularly acute with over 10,000 lives lost annually and over 50,000 people impacted by road crashes yearly. The high fatalities are caused by factors such as inadequate infrastructure, non-compliance with traffic regulations, and insufficient enforcement.
Addressing road safety requires a concerted effort from government bodies, private organizations, civil society, and individuals to implement measures aimed at preventing accidents, reducing injuries, and saving lives. Road safety isn’t one of the areas of health and social issues receiving the desired attention. As a result of this, the selfless and tireless sacrifices of the few people promoting road safety in many countries of Africa including Nigeria go unnoticed and unacknowledged. The Africa Global Roads Safety Awards was established to correct this anomaly.
